Why Study Jiu-Jitsu?

To prepare yourself for the reality of a violent physical confrontation, not a sport competition. To train in Jiu-Jitsu is to train for serious potentially dangerous real-life situations. If your life, or the life of someone close to you were threatened, would you know how to respond? Could you effectively deal with a hostile, violent confrontation? Would you act correctly?

One of the great strengths of Jiu-Jitsu is that it does not require great strength on the part of the student. Since Jiu-Jitsu is based on joint manipulation, pressure points, balance and re-direction of force instead on meeting force with force, even an individual who is very slight in build can effectively defend himself or herself against a much larger and stronger opponent. Jiu-Jitsu is a practical and effective system of self-defense that allows the practitioner a great deal of flexibility in their response to a violent situation.  The techniques are such that one can control an attacker without inflicting serious injury, or if required inflict serious injury to an attacker. Some people may wonder why they need to train in Jiu-Jitsu as opposed to simply taking a course in self-defense.  The answer to this question is simple "Use It Or Lose It".  If you do not train on a regular basis, you will never improve your technique.  As well, you will not develop the coordination required to effectively defend yourself or your family.  Also consider how much you would remember after a few years.

By training regularly you are able to greatly increase the number of techniques in your arsenal, and you will be far more competent in performing them under pressure.

Jiu-Jitsu is a life skill, as is swimming or first aid.

The ability to defend yourself is a crucial part of self-reliance, particularly when you realize that the only person who can save you in any confrontation is you. This knowledge alone should be sufficient motivation for you to begin this important training now!
